                                Culminating Event
The focus of our ten week classes will be to prepare an event to celebrate and share what we have learned and accomplished.  This event can take many different forms, a parade, a tea where we  use the cups and plates we have created,  a sculpture courtyard/ garden, to name just a few possible ideas. Our celebration plans will grow from our reading, storytelling and the direction the work of our hands takes us.  Please be sure to mark your calendar for  Sunday afternoon, November 20, 2011 from 3:00 until 4:30.

                                Clay
One of the key elements in visual art is form, that is, shape in three dimensions.  Working with clay is a fun way for children to begin this three dimensional thinking and building.  The clay itself teaches the children how to use it as they begin touching, squeezing, pounding, poking, patting and  pulling it apart.  From this beginning exploration children will naturally be guided to basic hand-building techniques such as
pinching, coiling, joining, and slab-building as they create different functional
and/or decorative pieces that come from their own creative center

                                Construction- Collage

Construction is building with cardboard, foam core board, paper, papier mache, wooden skewers, length of wires, pipe cleaners, beads, buttons, boxes, tubes and  painted paper to create three dimensional form.   The children will learn different joining techniques so that their sculptures will hold together  along with several different ways to fold and manipulate paper.  Papier mache  is the process of dipping torn paper into glue and then using it to form a skin over a sculpture.  When dry it can be painted to add color, texture and details.

                                Winter 2012

This winter at Winking Moon the children will practice
their drawing and painting skills by creating their own picture books.
This will give focus to their drawing and painting processes anda way to share their work in a meaningful way.

To start off each class I willl read a picture book to the children. We will look at the illustrations and discuss how the artist created them. This will give the students tools for their own work along with prompting ideas for their own stories. Our first book will be an accordion book where each page will use a different medium to complete the illustration. This will give the children a chance to try many different methods and mediums.

At the end of the ten week session the children will have:
Explored how to compose a painting or drawing on a page using one of four compostional techniques.
Painted with a gray scale so they can become familiar with the importance of value in a painting.
Learned to use a color wheel to pick a color scheme for their paintings.
Used overlapping elements and arial perspective to give depth to their illustrations.
Mixed a huge range of colors.
                                Drew with several different mediums.
Written several of their own stories and illustrated them.
Explored different methods of book binding.
Continued to develop their construction skills by building one of a kind "art" books.

                                 Author's Tea
A chance for the children to read their books to an audience and the last class in the session.

                                Shadow Puppets
Shadow theater is a marvelous way to teach the elements of a story (characters, setting, plot) in a way that comes naturally through a child's own playful work.  Here is where all the skills we have developed over the year:  construction, drawing, painting and storytelling; can be refined and used in a totally different medium.  Our storytelling skills will be used as the children pair up to create and recreate their own stories.  The puppets become the characters and the settings are drawn or painted.  It is fun to create special effects with sound and colored lights.

Our construction skills will come into play as different puppet  making materials are made available for the children to construct their puppets.  Some materials that have been used in the past include colored foam sheets, wax paper, colored gels, clear packing tape, feathers, buttons, pipe cleaners.  Part of the fun is to plan how to make the puppets move and interact with the other puppets.

Our drawing and painting skills can be used to create puppets and to create the settings for our stories.  The settings are typically drawn, painted or collaged on clear overhead projector transparencies.  These transparencies are placed on the overhead projector and the image is thrown onto the back of the shadow puppet screen.
The puppets can then interact with the setting.

                                Shadow Puppet Performances
After weeks of preparation the stories are ready for an audience.
Family and friends will gather on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 3:00 until 4:30 to watch and be amazed.
